One of the main reasons why employers carry out a background check on applicants for any given position is to check for themselves what the employment history of the applicant really and truly is.
While it is true that most applicants will provide an employment history in their resume or CV, the fact of the matter is that very often employers want to dig a little deeper and find out more about the person that they’re hiring.
Some employers will simply call up the references quoted on the CV or resume to check on the information provided there, but for others scoping out the employment history with a background check is far more reliable.
In particular this applies to jobs where employment history may be crucial, for example some companies that deal with fairly confidential information may need to know whether an applicant has worked for any of their competitors in the past.
That being said in the majority of cases employers simply want to find out whether or not the applicant in question is qualified to perform the job required of them, and knowing what jobs they’ve performed in the past could yield some information in that regard.
If nothing else a background check may turn up certain questions that can be directed to the applicant during the interview stage.
Is a Full Background Check Necessary?
One thing that is worth knowing is that if you just want to know the employment history of someone then sometimes a full background check isn’t really necessary.
In general a full background check would turn up other unrelated information such as where a person is staying, their credit history, criminal history (if any), and so on. Assuming that you’re not interested in all that, you should be able to carry out a narrower search that concentrates solely on a person’s employment history.
Normally such background checks use social security numbers, but carrying out a search based on a full name and other details could provide decent results as well.
If the results don’t match with the CV or resume, then you might want to dig deeper and actually start looking into their references and checking whether or not something is wrong to cause the employment history in the CV and background check to not match up.
As you can see scoping out employment history with a background check certainly has its uses, and nowadays it is so simply to carry out that more and more employers find that it saves them time and resources to just do so.
At the end of the day it is up to you whether or not you want to use this facility, but if you’re in a company where the history of your employees matters – it is better to be safe than sorry!
